Alcohol And Weight Gain

in Health and Weight Gain

The relationship between alcohol and weight gain is controversial. While some research indicates that alcohol does not lead to weight gain, others proof that alcohol actually leads to reduced weight due to increased metabolic rate, and the body does not adequately use the calories contained in alcohol efficiently.

Research further indicates that in spite of the calories contained in alcohol, drunk people are also more likely to indulge in unhealthy foods, thus increasing the likelihood gaining unhealthy weight. According to a different group of researchers, alcohol consumption decreases sugar intake. this in turn means that the body is weaned off bad sugar, especially the refined type.

What is agreeable among researchers however is the fact that anything which is not consumed in moderation can lead to unhealthy weight gain. As such, beer lovers can still continue enjoying their drink moderately, just as long as  they do not exceed the two recommended drinks a day. But what constitutes one drink?,you may ask:

  • A twelve-ounce can or bottle regular beer. This has an approximated 130 calories. since two are allowed on a daily basis, that means that  one can get an extra 260 calories from the beer alone daily. Considering that a person will have to consume other calorie-rich food daily, exceeding the 260 calorie limit from beer alone would most definitely lead to unhealthy weight gain
  • Five-ounces dinner wine
  • A shot of spirit or liquor either diluted or undiluted

Exceeding two drinks daily may not be healthy for a person trying to gain weight. this is simply referred to as overindulgence. Unlike what many people believe, alcohol consumption by itself cannot lead to unhealthy weight gain it has to be a combination of factors, such as poor eating and lack of physical activity among others.
