Weight gain in women is a common side effect in hormonal birth control. However, some studies prove that not all women gain weight while using birth control pills or injections. Those administered through shots birth control e.g. Depo-Provera had higher incidences of weight gain among users than the oral pills. But what is contained in birth control medication that predisposes women to weight gain: here are a few pointers:-
- Estrogen: High dosages of estrogen have been found to result in weight gain due to the increased probability of water retention. When water is retained in the body, there is a high probability that there will be sodium retention. To avoid high levels of weight gain, women should use pills with low estrogen levels.
- Some pill stimulates appetite. More to this, some studies suggests that the pills lead to insulin resistance. Once this happens, the body reacts by energy generated in the body is driven to the cells, where it settles as fat. This leads to weight gain and not even dieting can help reduce the weight levels in such in a scenario.
- A woman needs to feed on healthy diets even when on the pill. This reduces the likelihood of gaining weight. Some women give up on weight loss strategies whenever doing so seems too challenging and complicated.
- Making exercise a routine is also part of the solution to regulating weight while taking birth-control pills. This allows one to burn the extra calories that may have been consumed.
