What is PCOS: PCOS stands for polycystic ovarian syndrome. It is a common disorder among women of reproductive age from 12 to 45 years. PCOS are caused by endocrine. This disorder leads to female sub fertility.  An important feature of PCOS is obesity that happens due to gain in body weight.

Reasons for Weight gain due to PCOS:

There are various reasons for women with PCOS to gain weight. They are as follows:

  • Insulin resistance: Women who have PCOS suffer from insulin resistance that is difficulty in processing insulin. Insulin is an important hormone which breaks down body fat, sugar and existing carbohydrate content into energy. The insulin resistance in the body of these women prevents the excess substances from getting converted into energy and are stored as fat in the body. Due to the storage of fat in the body there is an increase in body weight. As a result, 50 to 60% of women with PCOS suffer from obesity and weight gain.
  • Type 2 diabetes: Usually women suffering from PCOS are not diagnosed properly. As they suffer from insulin resistance, there are chances that they may have Type 2 diabetes. As a result they may develop high levels of cholesterol which leads to weight gain.

How to tackle weight gain: Females suffering from weight gain caused due to PCOS will have to take special care of their diet and exercise plan. The females should get their check up done from time to time and should follow a healthy diet plan. A good exercise regime will also help females suffering from PCOS to keep a check on their weight gain.
