Muscle Weight Gain

What is muscle mass: Both weight gain and increase in muscle mass are correlated. Formation of one leads to the formation of another. If there is gain in muscle mass, the body weight also increases. Muscles are tissues, which form a part of the body, and add to body weight.

Reason for increase in body weight after gaining muscle mass:

As the muscle mass in our body increases there is also an increase in body weight. There are various reasons for which this takes place:

  • Addition of tissues in body: As the size of the bone in our body increases, our body weight increases. Similarly when there is growth of any tissues or fat in our body there is increase in body weight.  Muscle mass is formed of tissues in our body. If the size of these tissues increase the muscle mass also increases and as a result there is increase in the body weight. Muscles are fat tissues which carry weight and provide extra protection to the bones. These fat tissues make the body look healthy and add weight to the body. An individual with a frail and slim body has no muscle and so he is underweight.

  • Increase in appetite: In order to build muscles exercise is necessary, especially weight training. Whenever we exercise, we tend to feel more hungry due to strenuous physical activity.  The reason for feeling hungry is increase in appetite. Due to increase in appetite, we eat more and add more calories to the body. The addition of calories results in weight gain.
