Cortisol is a stress hormone that prompts one to eat more. The pituitary gland usually produces the hormone, which is necessary for the regulation of energy production, immunity, blood sugar and body defense. The production of too much cortisol is though to lead to unhealthy weight gain,while too little production of the same leads to health conditions such as exhaustion, chronic fatigue and Addison’s disease.
Cortisol increase in relation to an increase in stress levels. The stress can be anything from chemical, environmental, physical or imaginary. Elevated cortisol is a major contributing factor to the accumulation of fat in the stomach area. Such fat is usually very stubborn to get rid off. As such, one needs to work at stopping the fat accumulation from happening.
To avoid unhealthy weight gain due to high levels of cortisol, it is recommended that one includes multiple vitamins in his or her diet. The vitamins can also be consumed as supplements.
Viable sources of Vitamin C and magnesium should also be consumed regularly.
One should also consume Vitamins B5 and B6 on a regular basis. Herbs such as Hawthorn extract, schisandra, echinopanax elatum and thorn tree have been found to assist the body to cope with stress and hence a lower likelihood of producing cortisol.
