Diabetes Insulin Weight Gain

in Medication Weight Gain

When diabetics start insulin treatment, most experience weight gain of about 2-3 kilograms. This is termed as reasonable and often healthy weight gain especially because it may be the body’s own way of restoring some of the weight lost when diabetes was not controlled. However, continued gaining of weight to the extent of obesity is mainly blamed on poor eating habits.  To gain healthy weight while on insulin treatment, one is advised to

  • Stick by the recommended diet. This includes eating foods rich in fibre such as whole grains, oats and vegetables, avoiding carbonated drinks, cutting down on extra calories and drinking plenty of water.
  • Formulate an exercise program and stick by it. This will ensure that one is within the healthy weight range by burning any extra calories in the body.
  • Use the recommended insulin dosage because too much insulin may prompt the body to absorb too much calories
  • Adopt healthy eating habits. This is mainly done by taking small, frequents meals in good time
  • Taking the medication as directed by the physician also helps regulate weight as reasonable levels. People who resist using insulin for fear of gaining weightend up loosing too much weight and hence compromising their health. This in turn means that they are at a greater risk of developing diseases.

Insulin treatment helps people suffering from diabetes regain normal, healthy weight. When the disease is not well controlled, one ends up loosing a lot of glucose from the body thus causing the weight to drop drastically. Insulin treatment however helps in the restoration of fats and muscles.
