Does Effexor Cause Weight Gain?

What is effexor: Effexor is a drug that is used for treating depression, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and panic disorder. It also helps in killing suicidal tendencies in people suffering from depression. It has been proved that all anti depressant drugs cause weight gain. In the same way, effexor also affects the body by causing weight gain.

Reason for causing weight gain: Effexor is an anti depressant drug and as it has been proved that anti depressant is a major cause for weight gain. There are ingredients in the medicine that results in weight gain. The various reasons for effexor causing weight gain can be:

  • There is remeron (also known as mirtazapine) in effexor which causes an increase in appetite. Once the appetite increases, the person tends to eat more. This results gaining more calories, and hence increase in body weight. Remeron also slows down the metabolism rate which leads to increase in appetite. Remeron also causes drowsiness as a result lifestyle becomes slower resulting in increase in body weight.
  • There are ingredients like amitriptyline, imipramine and doxepin in some effexor pills. These category of effexor pills should be avoided by people who have slow metabolism as these composition further reduces the metabolism rate. As a result there is craving to consume food containing carbohydrate and consumption of carbohydrate causes increase in body weight.

In order to provide weight gain caused by Effexor one can consult their doctor and take a well balanced diet and also do regular exercise so as to maintain their metabolism rate and keep themselves healthy.
