Medication weight gain

in Medication Weight Gain

If you have been sick, you must have bought some over the counter medication or had a doctor prescribe it. Are you aware that medication also results in weight gain?

  • Prescription drugs are known to be the biggest culprits. If your doctor prescribed drugs to treat your seizures, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure and migraines you are at risk of weight gain. After you have been taking these drugs for some time, you will notice that you have started to gain weight. You can add as much as 10 pounds every month. The problem with gaining weight is that it can lead to obesity. Obesity has been linked to diseases such as hypertension.
  • Steroids for instance prednisone are also known to cause weight gain. Little wonder therefore that some weight lifters and professional builders never seem to have problems especially when it comes to adding weight.
  • Oral contraceptives, or what are referred to as family planning pills, also lead to weight gain. The pills are the major cause of weight gain in women since they are the ones who take them.
  • If your doctor has placed you on hormone replacement therapy, you are likely to add weight. Drugs that aid in hormone replacement are taken by old people, for instance women who have already started menopause.
  • Even though the medicine you are taking may be causing you to add weight, doctors recommend that you first consult your physician before going off the drugs because it is dangerous. Not taking your drugs as required can result in your preexisting condition getting worse and you may even lose your life.
