Use of steroid: Steroid is a drug which is prescribed by doctors for radiation therapy treatment and helps in decreasing the swellings in body tissues. But steroids are also used by lots of people for weight gain though it is not prescribed by doctors.

Causes of weight gain: The steroid that leads to weight gain is known as anabolic steroid. This form of steroid creates protein in the body, which leads to growth in muscle. Taking steroid causes weight gain as there is an increase in appetite. Steroid also causes to hold on to the salt and the fluid in the body which results in weight increase. The weight gain caused by retention of fluid and salt in body can be reduced by stopping intake of steroid.

Precautions: There are also precautions, which one can take to keep weight gain in control while taking steroid. Try to avoid adding salt to food while cooking or eating. It is advisable to avoid salty foods like cheese, ham, snack foods, bacon, pork, canned soups and salted nuts as they contain high level of sodium. It is always better to maintain a diet that is nutritious and well balanced. Try to include lots of fruits and vegetable in your diet.  Always avoid artificial sweet food like cakes and pies as well.

Other than the above precautions, it is best to consult a doctor for a weight loss diet. The reason that steroid helps in weight gain, is abused by lots of athletes. It is best advisable to not to take steroids unless advised by a doctor or it is required for a treatment.
