Our society is at present very conscious about gaining weight. It is generally assumed that weight gain should be controlled because it is closely tied to healthy living. People are becoming more aware of diseases that are caused by weight problems and are striving to exercise and eat healthy to maintain their weights. Most people associate unexplained weight gain to unhealthy diets and not exercising. This is true for some people but unexplained weight gain can be caused by things other than diet.

Unexplained weight gain can either be rapid or gradual. Whether rapid or gradual, it is important for one to find explanation as to why they aregaining weight. Unexplained weight gain can be as a result of health reasons, psychological reasons or as stated before, diet can be a cause.

1. Change in diet

One may add weight as a result of changing their diet. The change may either be in the type of foods that they take or the amount of food that they take.  Increase in the intake of carbohydrates in one’s diet may cause weight gain. When one increases the amount of food that they take normally they can add weight. Weight gain in this case is mostly gradual but in some individuals it might be rapid.

2. Health problems

Some ailments like Kidney or Heart problems might lead to an increase in weight. Other health problems that cause increase in weight include Cushing’s syndrome and Hypothyroidism. Here the weight gain is usually rapid because hormones in our body are affected.

3. Psychological problems

Depression or emotional problems cause some individuals to eat more as a way of dealing with these problems. This may consequently lead to an increase in their weight.

Other things that may cause unexplained weight gain include menopause and giving birth. Women during both these times experience a change in the normal functioning of their hormones and may gain weight as a result.
