Vitamin C is a necessity in the body’s normal growth and development. This is a water soluble vitamin, meaning that is can dissolve in water and cannot be stored in the body. Unused vitamin C leaves the body through urine. A body therefore continuously needs continuous supply of vitamin C in regular diet.
Since vitamin C is required for the repair and growth of tissues all over the body, it plays a major role in weight gain. Besides vitamin E and beta-carotene, vitamin C is a well known oxidant that prevents some of the damages caused by free radicals. These radicals can cause weight loss because they are products that result from the body’s conversion of food into energy. When they build up, free radicals cause faster ageing and contribute to several health complications like heart diseases, arthritis and cancer.
Vitamin C significantly contributes to gradual weight gain by ensuring healthy repair of the body and buildup of the muscles. However, since the body does not manufacture vitamin C, it is vital that plenty of vitamin C be consumed in vitamin C-rich foods in the daily diet.
Vitamin C is contained in most vegetables and all fruits. Foods with high amounts f vitamin C include citrus fruits and juices, green peppers, strawberries, turnip greens and other leafy greens, tomatoes, cantaloupe and sweet and white potatoes
To gain weight, you should take in these foods regularly and even several times a day because the body cannot store extra vitamin C. Fruits should also be included in other meals like breakfast, lunch and dinner.
